Summer Private Lessons

New to us? Come for a free intro lesson now with one of our experienced professional teachers, so you can be in the priority scheduling pool for summer! 

Summer lessons are on an individualized schedule to reflect your camp and travel plans. Whether you want lessons twice a month, or only in July, or all 10 weeks of summer vacation, we can put together a schedule combining your and your teacher's availability. 

Summer Half Day Programs, 2023:

July 24 - 28: Sing, Move & Act!
Aug 21 - 24 Wind Instrument Fun; Brass Audition Prep

When we receive your form we will then invoice you. Once paid in full, your spot is reserved for you and you will receive a confirmation.

About these programs: Our summer 2022 small-cohort half day programs allow for a 3.5 to 1 student to staff ratio, offering each child plenty of attention and musical support while still building a cohesive and creative group experience.

Summer half day programs are inside in an open area with open windows, A/C, and ultra-HEPA air filtering (to 0.003 microns). We will follow all local and state health protocols recommended at the time of camp.

Creative Music & Arts/Summer Fiddling Fun
Week of July 10-14 
Can be combined to make a full day program

Program Leaders: Casey Murray, Creative Abililty Development(R) and American Roots Music Specialist; Molly Tucker, String Faculty; Daphne Pickens, Music Staff

You can attend the morning, afternoon or both sessions. There is supervised lunch break provided between sessions at no extra charge for those attending both sessions. 

Creative Music & Arts for Strings and Piano - half day mornings 

Join us for this one-of-a-kind experience that will get your creative juices flowing! Our small summer morning cohort will spend the week weaving music, art and storytelling into an end-of-week performance.

Students will work at their own level with the building blocks of music – rhythm, melody, harmony and texture – while learning to improvise, play by ear, and create stories with music and art.

For: All kids age 7-12 who play piano or a string instrument (including guitar), and have had a few months or more of lessons

Maximum enrollment: 10 students

Time: M - Th 9:00 - 12:30; Fri 9:00 - 12:45 including performance for families @ 12:15

Summer Fiddling Fun for String Players - half day afternoons

If you can violin/viola/cello/bass/guitar you can fiddle! String at all levels on any string instrument, who have had a year or more of lessons*, can join and will be able to participate at their own level.  

You’ll meet the repertoire and styles of different fiddle traditions including Irish and Scottish, American and more, and learn fun fiddling techniques like the chop, double chop, waterfall, wiggle and flick!

You’ll play creative musical games, and experiment with open-ended, curious ways of playing that seek to “see what happens” musically, rather than trying to reach a preconceived result.

For: All kids age 7-14 who play violin, viola, cello, bass, or guitar, and have had a year or more of lessons*

Sing, Move & Act! 
Week of July 24-28 

Sing, Move & Act! for vocalists - half day mornings

Looking to grow your performance skills? Students will work on vocal warm-ups, harmonizing, singing techniques, being able to sing while they move, and so much more. We will be covering musical theater, pop, rock, and much more. At the end of the session we will put on a mini show to showcase what we learned.

Wind Instrument Fun/Brass Audition Prep
Week of Aug 21 - 25
Half day mornings

Wind Instrument Family Fun:
Build Your Own Instrument, with World Music Exploration
 

This program is for both current and future band kids! 

We will:

  • Explore the basic mechanics of different wind instruments
  • Make our own basic world-inspired instruments, ranging from double reeds to beginning brass instruments made from PVC, and many others!
  • Learn about world music for winds

An excellent introduction to wind instruments for students interested in band, or as an exploratory world music class for current band/string students.

For: All current and future band kids, age 8-12; younger kids may attend with a parent, and all parents are welcome!

Brass District & All-State Audition Prep 

Get ahead of the pack and up your auditioning game with the “Dr. H advantage”! 

“Dr. H” has had students succeed at Junior District, Senior District and All-State auditions on every brass instrument. We will cover:  

  • Solos
  • Scales
  • Sightreading
  • What to expect on the day of the audition
  • What makes an audition work: observations from score sheets of successful and less successful auditions

We will also talk about how to play when we are nervous - based on state-of-the-art, musician-tested performance psychology; and do practice mini-performances for each other in a supportive environment.

For: All brass players age 11-18, including trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tuba
